Case 5: The Midnight Fridge Raid

Case File

Your birthday cake had one perfect slice left. By breakfast it was gone, and the fridge had been opened four times in the night: 1, 2, 3 and 4 a.m. Remember: the culprit lies.

TipOpen one step at a time. The answer always asks twice, so nothing gets spoiled by accident.

1NudgeOpen

Start with clue 2. Crumbs on the hoodie means Sam, with the crunchy cereal. So Sam didn’t eat the cake, which makes his statement true.

2CloserOpen

Sam was down at 1 a.m. The cake went at 2 a.m. Now test each of the others as the liar. If Joe ate it, would Ray’s statement still be true? If Ray ate it, where would Joe’s statement put Joe?

3AnswerAsks twice

This shows the full answer. Sure?

Yes, show me

Cousin Mia (2 am, cake). Sam has crumbs on his hoodie, so he had the crunchy cereal (2), not the cake. Sam is innocent, so his statement is true: he was down at 1 a.m. The cake went at 2 a.m. (1). If Joe ate it, honest Ray’s “pickles or cereal” would be false. If Ray ate it, honest Joe’s “Ray came after me” would put Joe at 1 a.m., which is Sam’s slot. So Cousin Mia ate the cake at 2 a.m., and “I didn’t touch the cake” is her lie. Joe had the pickles at 3 a.m. and Ray the cheese at 4 a.m.
